Why Did Lee Harvey Oswald Kill JFK

What was Lee Harvey Oswald’s motive to assassinate President John F. Kennedy?  It is a perplexing question that does not have an easy answer. It is also probably one of the reasons why there are so many different conspiracy theories surrounding the events that took place on November 22, 1963, in Dealey Plaza. It is possible that Oswald’s motive had nothing to do with anger towards or hatred for President Kennedy. Instead, his actions may have resulted from his emotional immaturity and lack of self-esteem. He spent most of his adult life trying to make himself the center of attention.  In the end, Oswald placed himself at the center of the largest possible stage by assassinating the President of the United States of America. Ironically, he did not live long enough to receive the attention that he so badly sought. Oswalds Childhood Oswald never knew his father, who had passed away from a heart attack before Oswald’s birth. Oswald was raised by his mother. He had a brother named Robert and a half-brother named John. As a child, he lived in over twenty different residences and attended at least eleven different schools. Robert has stated that as children it was obvious that the boys were a burden to their mother, and he even feared that she would place them up for adoption.  Marina Oswald testified to the Warren Commission that Oswald had a hard childhood and that there was some resentment toward Robert, who had attended a private school that provided Robert with an advantage over Oswald. Serving as a Marine Although Oswald had barely reached the age 24 just before his death, he did a number of things in life in an attempt to increase his self-esteem. At age 17, he quit high school and joined the Marines, where he received a security clearance and learned how to shoot a rifle. During nearly three years in the service, Oswald was punished on several occasions: for accidentally shooting himself with an unauthorized weapon, for physically fighting with a superior, and for improperly discharging his firearm while on patrol. Oswald also learned to speak Russian before being discharged. Defection After being discharged from the military, Oswald defected to Russia in October 1959. This act was reported by the Associated Press. In June 1962, he returned to the United States and was quite disappointed that his return received no media attention whatsoever. Attempted Assassination of General Edwin Walker On April 10, 1963, Oswald attempted to assassinate US Army General Edwin Walker while he was at a desk by a window at his Dallas home.  Walker held very conservative views, and Oswald considered him to be a fascist.  The shot hit a window which caused Walker to be injured by fragments.   Fair Play for Cuba Oswald returned to New Orleans, and in August 1963 he contacted the pro-Castro group Fair Play for Cuba Committees headquarters in New York, offering to open a New Orleans chapter at his expense. Oswald paid to have flyers made titled â€Å"Hands Off Cuba† that he passed out on the streets of New Orleans. While handing out these flyers, he was arrested for disturbing the peace after being involved in a fight with some anti-Castro Cubans. Oswald was proud of having been arrested and cut out the newspaper articles about the incident. Hired at the Book Depository In early October 1963, Oswald obtained employment at the Texas School Book Depository solely by chance due to a conversation that his wife had with neighbors over coffee. At the time of his hiring, while it was known that President Kennedy was planning a visit to Dallas, his motorcade route had not yet been determined. Oswald had kept a diary, and he was also writing a book in longhand that he had paid someone to type for him—both were confiscated by authorities after his arrest. Marina Oswald informed the Warren Commission that Oswald had studied Marxism just to obtain attention. She also stated that Oswald had never indicated that he harbored any negative feelings towards President Kennedy.  Marina claimed that her husband had no moral sense whatsoever and that his ego caused him to be angry at other people. However, Oswald didn’t take into consideration that a person like Jack Ruby would step forward and end his life before he could receive all the media attention that he so badly sought.

O’Hara’s immediate experience in â€Å"How to Get There† revolves around that familiar moment of acknowledgement of loneliness as a precursor to independence. Through O’Hara’s use of enjambment, one can extrapolate the speaker’s uncertainty of living in a world where struggling and agonizing individually initiates the feelings of fear. This innate feeling of fear enshrouds the speaker in unfamiliarity, yet this exposure to reality contributes to independence and experience. For example, mutualism found within relationships can deter individuals from seeking experience beyond their comfort level (this can affect how they manage struggles stemming from unfamil iarity). Once exposed to unfamiliarity, the understanding of what is known or what should be known becomes a struggle in itself. For Sylvia Plath in â€Å"Elm†, the fear of delving into the unknown and being exposed to fierce pain, is palpably frightening yet essential to the human condition. Plath’s use of natural imagery illustrating the inevitable pain experienced in love strikes a chord in the audience, giving us a nostalgic feeling of loneliness and betrayal. When studying Modern China a common thread of ethical, cultural, religious, political, social, and economic aspects can be analyzed in relationship to Confucianism and its affect on international relations. These aspects show that historically (particularly the nineteenth century) China initially resisted the acceptance of Western influence in order to maintain its high level of uniqueness, isolation, and Confucianism which has bred its prosperity and demise. From its early to modern societies it was abundantly clear that China would be a largely Confucian-based society. Confucianism is a major system of thought in China. Developed from the teachings of Confucius and his disciples, their ideals centered on concern with the principles of good conduct, practical wisdom, and proper social relationships. Confucianism has influenced the Chinese attitude toward life, and set the patterns of living and standards of social value. The keynote of Confucian ethics is jen, variously translated as love, goodness, humanity and respect for your neighbor (http://www.formosa-kingdom.com/chinese/). Jen is a supreme virtue representing human qualities at their best. In human relations, jen is manifested in chung, or faithfulness to oneself and others. Other important Confucian virtues include righteousness, propriety, integrity, and filial piety. It is in this light that thoughts of Confucius can so largely affect all facets of life. Confucianism can affect and determine the ethical viewpoints of entire nations. The ideal social structure of East Asia was that of a Confucian hierarchy followed individually by a strong familial structure. Chinese society was modeled in a true Confucian structure with governmental workers being the elite, followed by the crop producing farmers, then the merchants, and finally soldiers. Chinese ethics place an enormous emphasis upon respect. It was my understanding from discussion and research that a Confucian society is primarily based on honor and the ideology that everything is done in the best interests of the family or society. Confucius states in the first article of his constitution that: Harmony should be held a treasure, and the person who eschews selfish opposition should receive honor (East Asia, pg. 64 from last year). This was the case in the book Thousand Pieces of Gold when a young girl named Lulu virtually sacrifices her entire life for the greater good. She played an uncharacteristic female role of a helping farmhand to help her family survive famine and through many other hardships she thought only of the good of her family. The classical legacy of Confucian politics in China has remained fairly constant as it is a centralized state under the rule of an enlightened emperor, and the spiritual individualism of the Buddhist faith seeking and promotes peace and prosperity. Modern China was dominated for nearly three centuries by the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) (in-class handout). The Qing Dynasty was a relatively weak Dynasty as they were easily influenced by outside powers and found little respect in their rule due to the lack of ethnic similarity to the people they ruled over. The Qing rulers were autocratic and despotic. The national economy was still based on agriculture. In the culture and practiced ideology, feudal ethics and rites continued to dominate society. Worse still, the Qing rulers persecuted many intellectuals, banning and destroying works that did not meet with their approval. The foreign policy of the Qing Empire was one of isolationism and a clear credo of nonacceptance to the West. The government was conservative and arrogant. It failed to join the industrial revolution that was spreading across the countries in the West. Sadly, these factors led to China falling more and more behind the developing world and the gap between it and Western nations inevitably widened.
